As the pilgrim host moved south through the North Riding in October 1536, a small royal scouting or herald party was dispersed near Northallerton by pilgrim outriders. The episode was minor but demonstrated pilgrim control of the Great North Road north of the Doncaster confrontation point. It reinforced the government awareness that the north was effectively in rebel hands.
