The Battle

History & Significance

St Catherine Castle near Fowey, built around 1540, guarded the entrance to one of the finest natural harbours in Cornwall. Fowey had been savagely raided by the French in 1457, and the construction of the blockhouse directly addressed the vulnerability exposed by that attack. The castle still stands on the headland south of the town.
