History & Significance

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that Hengest and Aesc fought the Welsh at Wippedesfleot, killing twelve Welsh chieftains. One of Hengest's thegns named Wipped was also killed, giving the place its name. The battle was part of the Kentish expansion inland from the original Jutish settlement.
