The Battle

History & Significance

Edward captured Stamford, one of the Five Boroughs, completing the reconquest of the southern Danelaw. With Stamford, Leicester, Nottingham, Derby, and Lincoln all either captured or submitting, the political geography of the East Midlands was transformed within a decade from the Danish heartland to firmly English-ruled territory. The speed of reconquest was remarkable given the scale of Danish settlement.
