Aethelwulf of Wessex allied with Burgred of Mercia to campaign in Wales in 853, reducing Gwynedd to submission. The alliance was cemented by Burgred marrying Aethelwulf daughter Aethelswith. This cooperation between Wessex and Mercia showed that the two kingdoms had reached a stable relationship after the turbulence of the 820s.
