The Battle

History & Significance

The first Battle of Corbridge pitted the Norse-Irish warlord Ragnall against a coalition of Scots under Constantine II and Bernicians under Ealdred. Ragnall's victory at the key Tyne crossing gave him control of Northumberland and set the stage for his seizure of York in 919. The battle illustrates the three-way contest for Northumbria between Norse-Irish Vikings, the Scottish kingdom, and the emerging English state.

Casualties & Losses

Heavy losses on both sides; two Norse chieftains Otta and Grabhare killed
