The Battle

History & Significance

James V escaped from Douglas custody at Falkland Palace in May 1528, riding to Stirling Castle which was held by loyalists. His escape triggered an immediate military crisis. James called a Parliament, attainted the Douglases for treason, and moved against them with an army. Archibald Douglas and his family fled to England where they would remain for years. James V then began his own vigorous personal rule with a deep hatred of the Douglas name.
