The Battle

History & Significance

Parliamentary forces under Colonel John Dalbier besieged Winchester Castle in October 1645, using heavy siege artillery to bombard it after the city had already fallen to Waller in 1644. After two days of intense bombardment Dalbier breached the medieval walls and the garrison surrendered, bringing the castle to Parliament with relatively little infantry action.
