History & Significance

Marcus Aurelius Carausius, a Menapian by origin, was appointed to command the Channel fleet and suppress Saxon and Frankish pirates. Accused of keeping captured booty for himself, he was condemned to death by Maximian — and responded by declaring himself Emperor of Britain (and parts of northern Gaul). He ruled for seven years (286–293), issuing fine coinage and enjoying genuine popular support. His assassination by his finance minister Allectus created the "Allectan" phase of the Britannic Empire.
