The Battle

History & Significance

Claudian the poet records that Stilicho came to Britain and conducted operations against Picts, Scots, and Saxons. He reorganised the surviving garrison, rebuilt damaged Wall sections, and reconstituted the Saxon Shore fort garrison system. This was one of the final substantial Roman military investments in Britain. When Stilicho stripped the British garrison in 401-402 AD for Italian wars against Alaric, the Picts and Scots immediately resumed raiding.
