History & Significance

Suetonius records that Vespasian's Legio II Augusta conquered the Isle of Wight (Vectis) as part of his campaign in the southwest. This is one of the few specifically recorded actions of the Claudian invasion beyond the main battles. The crossing of the Solent in the face of any resistance would have required amphibious capability. Vectis became part of the Roman province and its agricultural wealth was exploited; the Brading Roman villa is evidence of subsequent Romanisation.
