History & Significance

Edward stormed the Roman walled town of Colchester in 917 as part of his extraordinary campaign season that also saw the fall of Tempsford and Maldon. The Chronicle records the garrison was killed and many who had come from East Anglia and Mercia to aid the Danes also slain. Colchester was the oldest Roman city in Britain and its capture eliminated the last major Danish borough in Essex.
