The Battle

History & Significance

A Norse fleet used Milford Haven as a raiding base in 895, the same year the Danes were active in the Thames and Severn areas under Hastein. The deep-water haven provided ideal anchorage and the rich agricultural hinterland of Pembrokeshire offered plunder. Welsh defenders of Deheubarth mounted resistance to Norse inland penetration but could not prevent coastal raiding.
