The Battle

History & Significance

Lord Rhys captured Painscastle from the de Braose family in one of his final campaigns. The castle — two years later the scene of Gwenwynwyn's catastrophic defeat (1198) — sat on the border between Welsh Maelienydd and the English Marches. Its capture and quick recapture demonstrate the seesaw nature of border warfare in the Radnor/Brecon area throughout the twelfth century.
