The Battle

History & Significance

The siege of Barnard Castle was the only real military action of the Northern Rising. Sir George Bowes's small garrison resisted for eleven days but desertions proved fatal. However, the rebels had no real strategy after its fall and dispersed into Scotland as the royal army approached. Bowes wrote an account that provides the fullest contemporary record of the rising
