The Battle

History & Significance

The Milburn family of Tynedale and the Graham clan of the Esk valley and Debatable Land clashed repeatedly in 1528 over grazing rights and stolen livestock. The Grahams were the most notorious reiver family of the English West March, straddling the Esk and Lyne rivers in territory claimed by both England and Scotland. Milburn-Graham conflicts represented the collision between the English North Tynedale reiver system and the Debatable Land power of the Grahams.
