History & Significance

Domnall Brecc — king of Dál Riata and perhaps the most ambitious of the early Scottish kings — was killed at Strathcarron fighting the Britons of Strathclyde. He had fought on multiple fronts simultaneously, suffering defeats in Ireland and now Scotland. His death ended a major period of Dál Riatan expansion. The Briton Owen the Bald preserved Strathclyde's independence.
