History & Significance

Edgar Aetheling fled to Scotland with his mother and sisters in 1068 after the failure of the English to mount effective resistance to William. Malcolm III welcomed them and eventually married Edgar's sister Margaret -- the sainted queen who transformed Scottish court culture. Edgar's presence in Scotland gave the Scots a legitimating figure for their English political ambitions and provided the focus for continued Aetheling plots that would trouble William and his sons for decades.
