The Battle

History & Significance

East Anglian Danes besieged Rochester and the garrison held out until Alfred arrived with a relief force. The Danes fled to their ships. Alfred then harried East Anglia by land and captured a Danish fleet at the mouth of the Stour. The Chronicle records that while returning, his fleet was defeated by a larger Danish force — a reminder that naval warfare remained a Danish strength. The episode prompted Alfred's major naval building programme.
