The Battle

History & Significance

After killing King Duncan I in battle at Pitgaveny near Elgin, Macbeth had to rapidly consolidate control over the mormaerdom of Moray against any surviving loyalists. As mormaer of Moray since at least 1032 he had a strong local power base, but stamping out resistance in the immediate aftermath of the kingship change required swift military action throughout the province. Moray was the springboard from which Macbeth launched his successful bid for the Scottish throne.
