The Battle

History & Significance

After the catastrophic Norse sack of 870, the Strathclyde kingdom was rebuilt under Scottish protection. By the 930s and 940s it was strong enough to resist further Norse incursions. This defensive action at the Clyde approaches showed that Strathclyde, though now effectively a client kingdom of the Scots, retained military capability. The kingdom would persist until it was absorbed into Scotland around 1018.
