History & Significance

The climax of Wyatts march on London came when he led his remaining followers to Ludgate on the western approach to the City of London on 7 February 1554. He found the gate shut against him and, after waiting and finding no support from within the city, he surrendered to a herald nearby in Fleet Street. His capture at or near Ludgate ended the rebellion. He was subsequently executed on Tower Hill.
