Burpham near Arundel was one of the lesser-known but well-preserved burhs of Alfred Burghal Hidage, with impressive earthwork ramparts still visible today above the River Arun. The site controlled the tidal reaches of the Arun and provided a defended refuge against Danish sea raiders who consistently targeted the Sussex coast. Its inclusion shows Alfred systematic approach to defending every navigable river mouth on the south coast.
