Outcome
In 1570, following the assassination of Regent Moray and the collapse of the Northern Rebellion (whose leaders Percy and Westmorland had fled into Liddesdale and been sheltered by the Armstrongs), an English force under Sussex, Hunsdon and Forster launched a major punitive raid into the Scottish Borders, burning over 300 towns and homesteads and around 50 towers and castles in Liddesdale and Teviotdale, devastating the area and its Marian-sympathising inhabitants.
