History & Significance

Following his victory at Pilleth (1402) and the French alliance (1404-05), Glyndŵr conducted systematic raids into Gwent — south-east Wales and Monmouthshire. Towns including Abergavenny, Usk and areas around Monmouth were raided and burned. These raids in Gwent were some of the most damaging of the rebellion. English administration in the south-east was repeatedly disrupted, forcing the construction of additional defences.
