Alfred incorporated the old Roman walled town of Chichester into his burh network, restoring the Roman walls and establishing a garrison. Chichester controlled the coastal plain of Sussex and provided a defended base against sea raids. Its inclusion in the Burghal Hidage showed Alfred systematic approach to defending the Sussex coast using former Roman infrastructure.
