The Battle

History & Significance

The street fighting in Norwich during August 1549 was some of the fiercest urban combat in Tudor England. Warwick used German mercenaries to overcome rebel resistance in the narrow streets. The recapture of Norwich before Dussindale was essential to cutting off Kett supply and demonstrating that the government would use overwhelming force. The use of foreign mercenaries against English civilians caused deep resentment.
