History & Significance

The Duke of Hamilton concentrated elements of his Scottish Engager army at Moffat in Dumfriesshire as he organised his march south into England in the summer of 1648. The assembly at Moffat brought together Scottish infantry and cavalry units for the campaign that ended in disaster at Preston. The concentration in the upper Annandale area gave Hamilton his jumping-off point for the invasion of England.
