Essex gradually came under Mercian overlordship in the early eighth century. The kingdom retained its own kings but became subordinate to Mercia. East Saxon charters increasingly show Mercian influence and supervision. The submission of Essex to Mercia was part of the wider pattern of Mercian expansion under Æthelred and his successors.
