History & Significance

Middleham in Wensleydale served as a gathering point for the North Riding commons during the Pilgrimage of Grace in October 1536. The Neville heartland summoned men from Swaledale and the surrounding dales, adding a significant northern contingent to the pilgrim host. The muster demonstrated the extension of the rebellion into the former Percy-Neville bastions of the north.
