The Battle

History & Significance

The third Spanish Armada of 1597 was scattered by storms and a portion of it was sighted off the Lizard. Beacon fires were lit across Cornwall and Devon; Plymouth sound was prepared for defence and trained bands mustered at Bodmin and Exeter. The fleet eventually turned back without landing.
