History & Significance

In the immediate aftermath of Alexander III's death in 1286, Robert Bruce the elder (grandfather of the future king) and his allies in the Turnberry Band attempted to challenge the authority of the Guardians. There were military confrontations around the border castles as the Bruce faction tried to seize strategic positions. The Guardians maintained order but the episode demonstrated that the interregnum immediately became a factional struggle between the Bruce and Balliol claimants.
