The Battle

History & Significance

During the Parliamentary investment of Oxford in 1646, Magdalen Bridge on the eastern approach was a critical point. Parliamentary forces blocked the bridge to prevent Royalist sorties and resupply along the London road. Royalist sorties from the Eastgate and the Cherwell meadows tested the Parliamentary blocking positions around Magdalen Bridge repeatedly.
