History & Significance

William I began construction of the great stone keep of the Tower of London around 1078, using Caen stone imported from Normandy. The White Tower was the most ambitious military building project of the Conquest, designed to dominate London from within its walls rather than from outside the city. As both a fortress and a royal palace, it embodied Norman confidence in permanent rule and served as the symbol of royal power over England's greatest city for centuries.
