The Caledonian Canal is a major waterway constructed in the early nineteenth century to connect the east and west coasts of Scotland, running from the Moray Firth through a series of lochs and man-made cuts to Corpach on the west. The section from Loch Oich to Cullochy Lock forms part of this strategic canal system, engineered by Thomas Telford and completed between 1803 and 1822. This stretch utilises the natural water level of Loch Oich whilst incorporating a series of locks to manage height differences and facilitate navigation for vessels moving between Highland waterways. The canal represented a significant engineering achievement of its period and was conceived to improve communication and commerce across the Scottish Highlands, reducing the necessity for hazardous sea routes around Cape Wrath.
