Float hut circles and field system is a post-medieval settlement site located 1300 metres west-southwest of Float in Wigtownshire, south-west Scotland. The monument comprises the remains of hut circles and an associated field system that reflect agricultural occupation of this upland area during the early modern period. The site sits upon bedrock of the Gala Group, a hard wacke formation dating to the Telychian age, which would have provided a challenging foundation for settlement and farming.
The hut circles represent domestic structures typical of rural Scottish settlements from the sixteenth century onwards, when dispersed farmsteads became increasingly common in marginal upland landscapes. The field system visible at the site demonstrates how inhabitants managed the surrounding terrain for cultivation and pastoral use, adapting their farming practices to the local topography and geology. Such settlements often remained in use for generations, though many were eventually abandoned as agricultural practices changed and populations shifted towards lowland areas.
