Garage Cottage Scooped Settlements is a scooped settlement site located in Dumfriesshire, south-west Scotland, and protected as a scheduled monument by Historic Environment Scotland. The settlement consists of a series of shallow, sub-rectangular depressions scooped into the ground surface, representing the remnants of medieval domestic occupation. This form of settlement is characteristic of upland farming communities in Scotland, where dwellings were partially excavated into sloping ground to provide shelter and easier construction in exposed terrain.
The site lies on bedrock of the Riccarton Group, a Wenlock-age formation of wacke rock that underlies much of this region. The weathered wacke would have provided a substantial building material for the settlers, whilst the natural slope of the ground facilitated the creation of the characteristic scooped forms. Such settlements are typically associated with pastoral and subsistence farming economies across the medieval period.
