Overview

History & significance

Herd Hill milefortlet 4 is a Roman coastal fortification forming part of the Cumbrian coast defences erected during the second century AD. The site comprises a small rectangular fortlet accompanied by parallel banks and ditches that are characteristic of the linear defensive system constructed to protect the north-western frontier of Roman Britain. The milefortlet was designed to control movement along the coast and served as a lookout and garrison point within the broader network of such installations that extended along the Solway Firth approaches. The earthworks remain visible as low ridges and depressions in the landscape, representing a significant example of Roman military infrastructure adapted to the particular topography and strategic requirements of the Cumbrian coastal zone.
