Herd Hill North (tower 3b) is a Roman coastal defence tower situated on the Cumbrian coast in Cumberland, England, forming part of the systematic fortifications constructed along the north-western frontier of Roman Britain. Located 175 metres north-east of the sheep wash, the tower dates to the later Roman period and represents one of a series of signal and watch towers built to defend against maritime threats and maintain surveillance of the coastline. The structure would have served a defensive and communicative function within the broader network of coastal forts and fortifications that characterised Roman frontier strategy in this region. Though the tower is now fragmentary, its archaeological significance lies in its contribution to understanding Roman military infrastructure and coastal defence operations during the occupation of Britain.
