Pasture House (milefortlet 3) is a Roman fortified structure situated on the Cumbrian coast and forms part of the chain of defensive installations that extended the Hadrianic frontier system westward from the main Wall. Dating to the second century AD, the milefortlet represents a standard element of the coastal defence strategy, smaller in scale than the forts but positioned at regular intervals to maintain surveillance and control over maritime approaches. The site consists of a small rectangular fortification, characteristic of the milefortlet type, though its physical remains are now largely degraded and partially obscured. Pasture House stands as evidence of the Roman military's systematic approach to extending frontier security along the Solway Firth and the north-western coast, protecting supply routes and preventing incursions from the Irish Sea.
