Burnt mounds, also known as fulachta fiadh in Irish tradition, are characterised by accumulations of fire-cracked stones and charcoal debris, typically found in association with shallow water sources. These monuments are generally interpreted as the remains of cooking or heating sites where stones were heated in fire and then plunged into water-filled troughs to boil liquids or cook food.
