Overview

History & significance

Martello Tower, Leith is a circular defensive tower constructed during the Napoleonic Wars in the early nineteenth century as part of Scotland's coastal fortification programme. Built of stone in the characteristic squat, cylindrical form typical of Martello towers, the structure stands on the waterfront at Leith and was designed to resist artillery bombardment whilst providing platforms for defensive cannon. The tower represents the application of proven fortification designs developed following experience of French raids on the British coast, reflecting contemporary military concerns about invasion during the Napoleonic conflict. As one of the few Martello towers constructed in Scotland, it remains an important example of this distinctive fortification type and survives as a testament to early nineteenth-century defensive engineering on the Firth of Forth.
