Stromabank Hotel is a Second World War anti-aircraft battery, radar site and camp located in Orkney, Scotland. The installation formed part of the integrated air defence network protecting the strategically vital naval base at Scapa Flow during the conflict. The site's commanding position overlooking the surrounding landscape made it an effective observation point for tracking enemy aircraft approaching from the north. The underlying bedrock of Middle Old Red Sandstone, comprising conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone and mudstone deposited during the Middle Devonian period, would have provided a stable foundation for the military structures constructed here.
The battery's operational layout would have included gun emplacements, crew shelters and accommodation buildings, whilst the radar installation represented the cutting-edge technology deployed to extend early warning capability across the northern approaches. Such combined defensive sites became standard practice following the lessons of the Battle of Britain. The camp facilities would have housed the personnel required to operate both the anti-aircraft guns and radar equipment continuously throughout the war.
Today, the Stromabank Hotel site remains protected by Historic Environment Scotland under reference SM13558, preserving evidence of Orkney's crucial role in defending Britain's northern waters during the Second World War.
