Overview

History & significance

Stromabank Hotel anti-aircraft battery, radar site and camp is a Second World War defensive installation located approximately 150 metres north-west of Stromabank Hotel on the Orkney mainland. The site comprises an integrated air defence complex established during the latter stages of the war to protect the strategically important naval anchorages and shipping routes in Orkney waters. The installation included anti-aircraft gun emplacements, radar stations, and associated military accommodation and support structures typical of contemporary coastal defence sites. The physical remains reflect the rapid militarisation of Orkney during the conflict, when the islands served as a critical forward position in the defence of northern British waters against German air attack.
