Overview

History & significance

Bowness on Solway is a Roman fort and associated civil settlement at the western terminus of Hadrian's Wall in Cumberland. The fort, known as Maia, was constructed in the early second century AD as the final anchoring point of the Wall frontier and remains one of the most substantial examples of Roman military architecture on the frontier. The site includes remains of the fort's defences, internal buildings, and an accompanying vicus or civil settlement that developed to service the garrison. A medieval tower house was subsequently erected within or near the Roman remains, representing later occupation and reuse of the strategically significant location.
