Overview

History & context

Milecastle 2 (Walker) was a small fortlet on Hadrian's Wall, the second milecastle counting west from the eastern terminus at Wallsend (Segedunum). Like other milecastles, it would have been built in the 120s AD under Hadrian and garrisoned by a small detachment of auxiliary troops (perhaps 8–32 men), controlling movement through a gateway in the Wall. The site now lies buried beneath the eastern suburbs of Newcastle upon Tyne, in the Walker area.

Significance

Historical significance

As one of the easternmost milecastles, it formed part of the regularly spaced system of fortlets — set roughly one Roman mile apart — that policed crossings, levied tolls or duties, and projected Roman authority across the Tyne valley approach to the Wall's terminus at Segedunum. Its position close to the river and the fort at Wallsend made it part of the densely controlled eastern sector.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Very little survives or has been excavated; the milecastle's projected position is known largely from the regular spacing of the Wall's milecastle system rather than from direct investigation, as urban development in Walker has obscured or destroyed Roman remains. No structural plan, inscriptions, or significant finds are securely attributed to this specific milecastle, and its precise location remains somewhat conjectural.
