History & Significance

Thorfinn the Mighty and Macbeth — contemporaries who were actually related through their grandfather Malcolm II — fought over control of the north of Scotland. Thorfinn expanded his control over Sutherland and Caithness and defeated Scottish forces in several engagements. Their relationship was complex: sometimes allied, sometimes at war. This naval action in the Moray Firth represents one of their conflicts.
