History & Significance

Sigeberht had retired to a monastery but the East Anglians dragged him from his monastery to lead them against Penda, knowing his presence would inspire the troops. He refused to carry weapons as a monk, carrying only a staff, and was killed along with King Ecgric. Sigeberht was venerated as a martyr. It was an early demonstration of Mercian military superiority.
