History & Significance

Rockingham Castle, guarding the Welland valley on the Northamptonshire-Leicestershire border, was taken by Parliament early in the war and used as a base for operations in the eastern Midlands. Its elevated position on the scarp of the Welland valley gave it commanding views over the surrounding countryside. The castle's ownership by the Watson family, who were Parliamentary, smoothed the transition.
