History & Significance

The year after Lindisfarne, Norse raiders attacked Jarrow, home of Bede's monastery. On this occasion they were partially repulsed — their leader was killed and foul weather destroyed several ships. This rare early setback for Viking raiders demonstrated that the English were capable of resistance when warned, but raiding continued elsewhere.
