History & Significance

Archaeological evidence at several Antonine Wall forts shows destruction layers dated to around 155-158 AD, consistent with a major attack. This disruption, combined with troubles on Hadrian Wall, appears to have prompted a strategic reassessment. The Antonine Wall was temporarily reinforced and then permanently abandoned in favour of Hadrian Wall around 163 AD.
